Moving Tips by Downtown Self Storage

Getting Ready to Move? We Have a Few Tips.

|

Moving is a lot of work. Even if you're moving down the street or across the country, the stress level can be the same. The good news is that Downtown Self Storage is here to help!  We have a few moving and self-storage tips to help make your move a little easier.

1. Shop around! Find the best movers for you.

There are a LOT of movers out there. Try and look up at least three different companies, figure out their rates, and decide which is the best for you. If you have a smaller amount of furniture and goods, want to rent at a lower price point, and aren't afraid of elbow grease, U-Haul is always a great option as well!

If you need a Uhaul, check with Downtown Self Storage at Johnson Street to rent a moving van.

2. Don't Pack All at Once.

Packing is stressful! Don't do it all at once. Turn on an episode of your fave tv show or a podcast you love and use that to limit the time you spend throwing stuff into boxes. When the credits roll, it's time to take a break.

Take it slow, plan out the process over a couple of weeks, move room to room. Moving is all about change, and change can sometimes be hard - no reason to make it any worse by procrastinating or trying to do too much too fast.

3. Don't Overfill Your Boxes.

We're not all weightlifters, and books are heavier than they seem. It might look cool to lift that 90-pound box, but your form better be perfect! Try to keep your boxes under 50 pounds, even if that means more boxes - better to have more boxes than a sore back.

4.  Repurpose Household Items for Packing

Duffel bags, suitcases, laundry hampers: you have lots of containers already! Duffel bags, suitcases, laundry hampers: you have lots of containers already! Use what you have on hand, and then add boxes. We have plenty of boxes, tape, and moving materials available at both Downtown Self Storage facilities.

5. Use Self Storage

As you think about what to keep and what goes, renting a self-storage unit is a wise option. Storing your stuff while taking your time to decide what works in your new space takes a little pressure off. Check out Downtown Self Storage for your best option. We're locally owned and have been serving your community for over 30 years.
