How-to:
Vinyl isn’t as sturdy as it seems: keep the sleeves on your albums whenever possible, and make sure to store them upright. Letting them lean or storing them at an angle can be potentially damaging. Clean records before storing with a microfiber cloth to deal with dust. For more persistent buildup, use a record cleaning solution. Any buildup in the grooves can affect playback or cause damage.
Boxes: Paper or Plastic?
Cardboard boxes are inexpensive, which is always a plus, but they wear down over time and are susceptible to moisture damage. Plastic boxes are waterproof and more durable, but can also trap water inside! A silica packet or two inside with your records will keep them nice and dry. We recommend the same treatment for electronics.
Heat, Cold, and Humidity:
If you’re storing a collection in a residence, avoid the basement and attic: extreme heat and cold are both bad for records. As for storage units, an indoor, heated unit is a great choice. Just try to avoid outdoor storage when possible.
