Happy couple in the Portland fall

Leaf Peeping in PDX: 2026 Update

Back in 2022, we covered the basics of leaf peeping in Portland. Fall is already back; so here's a fresh look at when the color should arrive this year and where to go see it.

Based on Explore Fall's 2026 Fall Foliage Map, which our friends at KATU recently highlighted, peak color in Portland is forecast for November 4-10. That's later than usual in the Pacific Northwest, so if you've been waiting to see the fall foliage, you'll have a few more weeks.

The 2026 color timeline:

Right now, Portland is mostly green with little to no fall color. The first hints should show up around October 9, followed by moderate color about a week later. By late October, expect high color, which makes it a great time for a first outing. Peak color will then arrive in early November. The forecast also shows Portland running near normal for the start of the season, so nothing is unusually early or late so far.

One caveat: peak timing around Portland is hard to pin down. Our hills and varied terrain mean a small change in location can shift the expected peak by several days. If you're planning a trip to a specific park or garden, use a resource like the Explore Fall interactive forecast map to make sure you hit peak color. Your favorite spot may peak a bit before or after the citywide estimate.

Why do leaves change color?

As days get shorter, trees stop making chlorophyll, the pigment that makes leaves green. The yellows, oranges, and reds were in the leaves all along, and they show once the green fades. Cool weather tends to bring out richer color, while warm weather breaks down chlorophyll faster and can shorten the show. For the full story, check out our original leaf peeping blog.

Where to go

Hoyt Arboretum is a great place to start, with a huge variety of trees and plenty of color. The Portland Japanese Garden is a classic fall visit, and Forest Park offers miles and miles of trails to wander. For an easy downtown stroll right by the Pearl District, head to the Park Blocks. If you're up for a day trip, Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge are both scenic options.

Get ready for the season

While you wait for the color to peak, it's a good time to prep the house for the wet months ahead. Grab your rake and leaf bags, and tuck away summer gear like patio furniture. Our guide to storing outdoor furniture safely covers how to protect it from the cold and damp.

Need space to store your summer gear? Downtown Self Storage has units in every size, and both of our locations are certified U-Haul rental locations with moving supplies on-site.
