Here are five tips to help you live large in a small space this year.

Think Vertical Before You Think Bigger

Dorm rooms and studio apartments rarely have enough floor space, but they almost always have unused wall and ceiling space. Over-the-door organizers, stackable bins, and bed risers can free up a great deal of storage without costing you a single square foot. Before you rent a bigger place or a bigger storage unit than you need, take a hard look at what's above your head. Rolling storage carts that slide under a lofted bed are a dorm classic for a reason.

Pack a Seasonal Bin, Not a Seasonal Closet

You don't need your winter coat in July, and you definitely don't need your bike in January. Sort your belongings by season and pack the off-season items into clearly labeled bins. This is where a self-storage unit becomes a student's best friend rather than a luxury: instead of cramming a bulky comforter, a bike, and a mini fridge into a 130-square-foot dorm room, tuck the off-season stuff into a nearby unit and swap it out as the Portland weather turns. Don't Bring It Home for Summer Break, Store It Instead

Hauling your entire dorm room back to your parents' house every June, only to haul it right back in September, is exhausting and expensive if you're flying. Before move-out, go through your things and ask whether an item earned its spot for another year. Donate the clothes you didn't wear, recycle the notes from a class you'll never retake, and only pack what you'll actually use again. A smaller, well-organized unit is cheaper and easier to dig through than a jam-packed one, and your future self will thank you when you're searching for your winter boots in October.
