Spring is in the air, and so is the dust on your ceiling fan! Time to shake off winter and refresh your space!
It's still cold, but the end of winter is in sight! So, too, is spring cleaning! While it's a great way to make sure you and your home are ready for the coming year, a deep clean isn't always the most fun. But that's alright! Downtown Self Storage has great tips and tricks to ensure that your deep cleaning is smooth, easy, and stress-free.
Double Check Your BaseboardsÂ
Baseboards are an oft-neglected part of the home. They're often out of sight and out of mind. Weekly dusting helps, but a deep clean a few times a year is a great way to make your home look and feel truly clean. Start by giving them a quick once-over with a duster or broom. Then, wipe them down using a soft, thin cloth to reach all the cracks and crevices, along with a gentle solution of vinegar and water. This simple step will leave your baseboards spotless and your space feeling truly refreshed! Now that your baseboards are sparkling, let’s tackle something even sneakier—your rugs!
Clean Your Rugs and Carpets
Rugs and carpets sit underfoot all year and accumulate dirt and grime. While vacuuming helps, it's not a 100% solution. To ensure the longevity of carpets and rugs, using a rug shampoo or having them cleaned is a great idea. Synthetic carpets and rugs with a waterproof backing can be shampooed at home! Otherwise, rugs may require a professional cleaning. If you have a wet-dry vacuum, washing your rugs and carpets yourself can be a great way to save some cash. Cleaning a rug before storing is never a bad idea either, and we recommend wrapping it in plastic for long-term storage. Can't be too careful, even in indoor storage.Â
Don’t Forget Your Walls & Ceilings
After tackling your floors, don't forget to look up! Walls and ceilings collect dust, cobwebs, and surprising stains over time—think coffee splashes, pet shake-offs, or that blender mishap from last summer. Start by dusting with a microfiber cloth or vacuum brush attachment to remove loose debris. A mix of warm water and mild dish soap works well for stains, while a magic eraser can help with tougher spots. Don't forget high corners and areas around vents and light switches where grime tends to build up. A quick refresh will brighten your space and make your home feel spotless!
Refresh Your Fabrics: Wash Comforters & Curtains
After giving your walls some attention, it's time to focus on the fabrics around your home. While you may wash your sheets regularly, when was the last time you washed your comforter, curtains, or bathmats? These items, along with kitchen towels, rags, and other fabrics, often get overlooked but could likely use a good clean. Different fabrics require different care, so always check the care instructions on the tags. If there's no tag, don't worry! A quick search online can help you find the best way to wash your fabrics based on their material. Taking care of these often-neglected items will keep your home feeling fresh and cozy.Â
If it's something you haven't washed before, a spot test is a good idea: clean a small portion of the item (somewhere concealable) and allow it to fully dry. This is just to double-check and see if your cleaning product will discolor it.
Check Expiration Dates Beyond the Fridge
Expiration dates aren't just for food—your deep cleaning routine is the perfect time to check other household items, too. While you're clearing out the fridge and freezer, don't forget to go through your medicine cabinet. Expired medications can be ineffective or even dangerous, and old makeup can cause skin irritation or breakouts. Take a few minutes to sort through these items and safely dispose of anything past its prime—your health (and your skin) will thank you!
