The weather is cooling off, and the clouds are rolling in. The rainy season is upon us.
What then should we do with our patio furniture? Leaving it outside covered or uncovered is always an option, but it's even better to take it indoors. No room? Visit us at Downtown Self Storage for self-storage options. We have a few tips and tricks to make sure your lawn furniture sees many summers to come.
Cushions
Wash your pillows on the gentle setting of your washer. Wash non-removable covers with a diluted detergent. Make sure to dry all of your pillows completely, either in the machine or air dry, and then they're safe to store! Make sure to keep cushions (only once they're bone dry) in a sealed plastic bag or bin to prevent moisture and mildew.
For the furniture itself, the treatment varies by material:
Wood
Wood, on the other hand, requires a more delicate touch. A mixture of vinegar, baking soda (be sure to stand clear), ammonia, and water can be used to disinfect the wood, which will prevent rot. Furniture oil will then seal the wood, preventing any further damage. Dry thoroughly before storing!
Wicker
There are two types of wicker - natural rattan and synthetic rattan. Natural wicker is made of wood and is a thin, fragile material. Synthetic is a little tougher but still needs treatment before storage. Mold builds quickly with wicker, especially in the small nooks and crannies in between woven areas.
Work over the item with cloth, an oil-based detergent works best. Dry throughout before storing your wicker furniture.
Composite
Composite furniture is susceptible to freezing cold temperatures, and furniture can become brittle and break under extreme weather conditions. Plastic also tends to fade, and keeping it in a dry place for the winter will help keep the color bright. Wash and dry with a mild detergent and store in a dry place.
Metal and Iron
Be sure to inspect metal and iron furniture for rust and treat any corroded areas with rust neutralizing primer, steel wool, and a fresh layer of paint. Car wax can also help to seal the metal and limit exposure.
Aluminum
Aluminum may be rustproof, but the damp, wet weather can cause the non-aluminum parts to rust and weaken in a long Oregon winter. Also, aluminum can contract and expand, which can damage the frame of the furniture.
