Let's Get Dirty! 😊🌿🌻

It's spring in Portland!🌻

If you've got a green thumb, spring has been obliging with warmer temperatures and even a few warm days in between rain clouds. It's time to prepare our gardens, pots, and patios for another beautiful summer. But garden and yard work can require storing some equipment: pots, extra soil, pruners, trowels, shovels, a lawnmower, and more.

If you plan to add more tools, enhance your outdoor living space or plan a more robust garden, you may need more space than is available in your home or garage, and self-storage is a great option.

If you need tips on preparing your patio for summer, check out blog--Is Your Patio Ready for the 4th of July?

Consider the Variables when Storing Gardening Materials

Let's talk about space pros and cons. While a garage may be highly accessible and more weather-proof than leaving it outside on your patio or in the yard, would you rather reserve it for your car, mountain bike, or other valuable possessions or crammed in with your outdoor tools?

For those large items like your beloved fabulous wicker outdoor seating from the 70s and the 3-foot garden gnome, an indoor storage unit is a surefire way to keep them safe and sound. When the seasons change, you can swap your almost never-used snowblower for your lawnmower to preserve that precious garage space.

Make the Most of the Space

Urban dwellers know that you have to make the most of your space. Shelves and wall mounts for tools can leave precious floor space clear when needed. Reusing an old bookshelf is an easy fix, as is installing a pegboard tool wall. We highly recommend a pegboard tool wall; it's an excellent way of keeping tools organized and out of the way. If you have the space, you can set one up for your rakes and brooms. They take up quite a bit of wall space, but the pegboard gets them off the floor. The perfect solution, even for a small patio.

Storing Smaller Items

A tacklebox or empty jars are a great way to store small parts: extra nails, paint brushes, coiled power cords, screws, bits of that project that you’re still working on. Plus the small compartments allow you to keep everything organized. For larger items, plastic bins will keep everything organized and stackable, which saves space. We prefer clear plastic, as it allows you to see the contents of the box. Plus plastic boxes are more water resistant, and add that can help support outdoor shed storage. Airtight is better: the more airtight the box, the less danger is posed from moisture in the air.
